RR My Writing About Writing
Through the creation of my genres for project 3 I had to consider presenting the ideas I had over multiple strategies of presentation. For all of the genre types I was simply trying to make everything fit together with correlating information but I soon found out that was not going to work. I started my third project by gathering my information from the previous project that I had included in my research paper. Once I had all of the information laid out in front of me I had an idea. By having multiple teaching angles to my project I made a website, interactive component, and a sculpture. Each of these three unique genres I have included in project 3 were used separately but still intertwined to educated on marijuana, survey marijuana use, and to test what people know about marijuana.
Genre 1 was created based off of my research paper. For my first genre I made a website and linked a research tab to it. The website I made includes all portions of project 3 and is meant to tie together the message from each genre in an easy to access environment. Under the research tab there are links to pages that describe the listed topic in more detail. I think it is important to have information displayed in a page to page basis instead of a full research paper because it holds the attention of an audience longer due to the ease of access. Lets say someone wanted to learn about the effects of marijuana legalization and how it effects the drug war with south America. Well, If one had to go through my whole research paper to find out I believe they would get bored and go find an easier place to find the information. So, In the creation of the research pages such as the one for marijuana legalization and its effects on drug war I added a portion of pertinent information along with graphic images and graphic representation for many of the topics discussed.
In Genre 2 I thought at first it would be a good idea to interview people infant of a camera and ask them questions about marijuana. The purpose of this was going to be to see how much the average college student (the most common pot user) knows about marijuana. After putting together a list of questions I then realized I could also include a survey question section including has the individual tried marijuana or have friends that commonly use and how does it effect them. At this point I realized that I needed a way to ask these questions without showing a face as marijuana is still an illegal drug in the state of Florida that would impact the results of my interview, so I opted to change my genre 2 into an anonymous survey based way of gathering data. The unique feature about having an online based survey is that it is anonymous, more date can be gathered, and most of all the results which are updated every time someone sends in a new response and can be shared publicly. One of my favorite features about doing an online survey and quiz is that I can share the link for people to access the survey and I can share a link for people to see what everyone else responded. This is a great form of genre to see what you really know or don't know for that matter, then go read the research paper I attached to the website and learn.
For my third and final genre I originally wanted to make a fake marijuana plant with leaves that had facts written on them. As I put more and more information together it became extremely clutered and overwhelming so I downsized. The main problem with having a fake plant presentation would be that there are so many leaves and unless the leaves were all color coded then it would be nearly impossible to organize such a plethora of information. As I continued to think of ways to present my 3rd genre I stuck with the main idea in my mind that I didn't have to portray a lot of in depth information but just enough to give a basic understanding that your average day person wouldn't know. So, I then became stuck with an creating an artistic means of presenting this material that was eye catching for viewers. After much consideration I came up with a gigantic fake joint with information written on the side of it. Inspired by Ceech and Chong the unrealistically big joint is meant for a comedic factor.
In conclusion the three genres have come together nicely each and every one complimenting the previous one just enough to make the multiple genres intertwine. If I could have done anything different in this project it would have been learning how to design a website better then I do. I never realized how hard it is to make a website that is appealing to look at, even though every day I look at many websites. Finally,I hope that my research paper has been considered very informative and well accompanied by its 3 genres.
